Why Should You Join Twitter?

More than once I have mentioned the importance of networking. I stand behind that statement, starting with Twitter.
When I became a member of Twitter I wanted to show off my blogs. I never expected for that to grow into more. It didn’t take long for me to start twittering about dinner, about my work life and even my personal life. I became addicted, but that is not necessarily bad.
Did you know that Yahoo Messenger tweets on Twitter? Comcast even cares enough to assist you through their Twitter account! If these bigbox companies find benefit in being present on Twitter, that should tell you one thing:
Twitter must help businesses spread the word.
Twitter offers a close-knit style community which allows individuals to ‘tweet’ using only 140 characters to describe what is going on within their lives. It allows businesses to connect with their customers. Websites, news sources, and blogs use Twitter to share their latest updates. Every day people use Twitter to find new businesses and friends. This is something you should use to your advantage!
Here are a few ideas, that I have learned first hand, which will help you get started off on the right foot:
- If you’re looking to promote your business, don’t link to your website with each tweet. The only exception is when that tweet is link-relevant.
- Take the time to interact.
- Respond to questions that are directed at you and your business.
- Anyone who has been around twitter can tell you that promo-only tweets are annoying. You’re not going to attract many people that way. Instead, tweet interesting observations, business thoughts, and add in those up-to-date new things going on within your business. If there is a page, a news article or even a blog post that goes along with your latest statement, then link to it. There is a fine line between spam and actual content, be careful and try to stay on the right side.
- This is a wonderful tip for everyone, and it is not limited to just one style of business. What makes Twitter so great is the ability to follow and interact with people. It’s no good if everyone is following you for updates, but you refuse to follow others. Once you follow their updates, you need to interact with them. If someone asks a question that you can help with, say something! If you have a relevant thought on something that was just tweeted, share it! People are more likely to follow if you do more than promote yourself all of the time.
- After a while you might find your customers contacting you with questions through Twitter, especially if they follow you regularly. Respond to those questions. That is simply good customer service, and happy customers will tell others about how great you are. Good Twitter-etiquette will create positive word-of-twitter, and possibly positive word-of-mouth communication. The happier you make people by responding to questions, the happier they will be to recommend you to their friends.

I’m new to twitter, well Ive had an account for a while and have only just started using it. One of the issues I have with it though - its that it seems to be always on - I have to turn my email off to get work done and I think I might have to do the same with twitter - how do you manage your time with twitter? A lot of people seem to send a whole lot of messages at the same time but I find that annoying personally - is there a way to schedule twits in the future?
Although I am answering Lis at her own blog, I wanted to let everyone know that there is a way to schedule tweets.
There are more options than this, but the one I know about (because I use it) is TweetLater.com.
That’s cool - thanks for the quick answer - as I said I am only just getting my head around twitter! I’m http://twitter.com/lissie45 I’ll follow you back if you follow me !
No problem, I just happen to be awake, lol.
I’m following you now.
